1. Keep an emergency list of phone numbers by the bed and the main phone. Install an emergency phone system the can be activated with a button or wristband. Have a non-portable phone in the house, in case of power failure, portable phones run on electricity.

2. Place a flashlight by the bed and next to the favorite chair in case of power failure and check the batteries often.

3. Remove any worn electrical cords, check lamps for the proper wattage and adequate lightening, replace burned out bulbs. Check electrical sockets for overload and install surge protectors.

4. Install night-lights to prevent stumbling and disorientation upon awaking in the night.

5. Check smoke detectors to ensure proper working order. Check and make sure alarm can be heard or seen when activated.

6. Install co2 detectors with a battery back up in case of power failure.

7. Install railings and grab bars as needed, check medical supply stores for portable suction to the walls (no drilling) bars, grab bars in the bathtub are a necessity for safe maneuvering on and off the commode & in and out of the tub.

8. Keep dishes and food staples accessible, in easy to reach locations poor balance results in falls from stepladder’s and step stools.

 

9. Encourage the use of walkers and adaptive equipment as needed, unsteady balance can result in falls.

10. Heavy anchored furniture placed in strategic position can help steady an unsteady walk; unexpected movement can throw off balance.

11. Pack emergency food and supply box, rations should be adequate for each person for three days.

12. Always ask for identification from anyone who comes to your door from a utility company or reps from utility they will always have an ID and should not hesitate to show it. If you have doubt DO NOT LET THEM IN.

13. Eat regular meals with warm drinks, this will provide warmth and energy. MOVE, it not only will help with circulation, you will feel warmer.

14. Exercise, it not only makes you feel younger and look better it also helps prevent high blood pressure, and a host

of other problems related with the aging process.

15. Dress appropriately coat, mittens (they keep your hands warmer) and especially a hat this is a must.

16. Getting a flu shot may cut down your risk of getting the flu.

17. Be careful when shoveling snow in the winter. Snow is heavier than it looks.
